MORE safety measures are needed on a dangerously narrow Middlewich road after a pedestrian was clipped by a car wing mirror.

Warning signs have been put up on Lewin Street to caution drivers that the road narrows by the White Horse but these did not stop 46-year-old Richard Leigh being hit as he walked along the footpath opposite the pub on June 26.

Richard, who has lived on Lewin Street for 22 years, says this is a regular occurrence for him as he walks to and from work along the road every day.

He said: "I get hit regularly as I walk backwards and forwards morning and evening.

"Quite often you find lorries on the pavements and they often knock down spouts off.

"If I reported every incident to police they'd be fed up of listening because it's certainly every month."

He added: "People don't realise that the road is not wide enough - it really wants some white lines on the edge of the road to narrow it a bit."

Town councillor and deputy borough mayor Clr Mike Parsons is concerned about the road and agrees that markings should be added.

He said: "I don't understand what's wrong with a pot of paint.

"We need white lines along the kerb side to bring it home to people."

PC Mike Senior, from Middlewich CAT team, has been working with Clr Parsons to find a solution.

He said: "We've worked in partnership with highways to have some kind of traffic calming introduced and agreed to put the 'road narrows' sign in place heading out of and into Middlewich.

"Unfortunately as there has been another incident it would appear drivers are not heeding that sign."

He added: "We'll make more representations to highways in order to have some other form of marking or calming measure put in place but we understand that due to highways regulations we can't do many things."
