PURE luck is the only thing preventing a serious accident on a Middlewich bridge, according to a resident furious with drivers ignoring a one-way system.
Motorists can only travel over the hump-backed Brooks Lane bridge from Lewin Street into Brooks Lane and no entry signs were painted on the road in February to highlight this to motorists.
But Chris Overton, of Brooks Lane, said drivers are continuing to ignore the system.
She said: "It's flouting the law and if people can flout the law on that they can flout the law on anything.
"One of these days someone is going to get killed - we had one accident when we first moved here three years ago and it's only pure luck that there's not been anything else."
Chris, a member of the Middlewich Clean Team and the Community Pride group, worries about the safety of pedestrians walking over the bridge who are only expecting traffic from one direction.
She said: "I've had people nearly running me over when I've been walking there.
"There's also a nursery on Brooks Lane and people park on Lewin Street, opposite the garage, and walk their kids over the bridge only expecting vehicles from behind, not in front."
PC Mike Senior, from Middlewich CAT team, said police had caught two vehicles at the spot.
He said: "It's just a matter of luck and chance being there and catching people.
"We will tackle it if we see it but unfortunately we can't be there 24 hours a day."
