POLICE are urging residents not to take the law into their own hands after a man confronted a group of youths and was assaulted with a brick
The incident happened at around 7pm on Friday when the 41-year-old victim went out to deal with the teenagers riding a mini motorbike near to his home in Mallard Way.
The group then became extremely abusive and threatened the man before following him home.
Det Sgt Dave Snasdell, from Winsford Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said: "The gentleman was threatened by the youths so he returned home.
"Shortly after they knocked on his door and when he answered threw a brick at him, injuring his hand."
The incident comes a week after police announced a clampdown on youths riding motorbikes illegally on the town's estates.
Det Sgt Snasdell said: "We have powers to deal with people riding these mini motorbikes in an anti-social way.
"I realise this type of behaviour can cause a great deal of anger to people but I would ask them to contact us rather than tackling those responsible themselves.
"This man attempted to deal with the problem and it has resulted in him being assaulted."
Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Det Sgt Snasdell said: "I would like to hear from anyone who can help us identify the people responsible for this assault.
"They have been riding this motorbike illegally and then assaulted a gentleman at his own front door and we are very keen to speak to anyone who can help."
Anyone with information should call Det Sgt Snasdell on 01244 612594.
