POLICE are questioning a Winsford man on suspicion of murder after a father-to-be died of multiple stab wounds following an incident in the early hours of Sunday.
Jamie Lee Vernon, 18, of Dee Way, was attacked at around 1am and died from his injuries at Leighton Hospital soon after.
His girlfriend was expecting his first child.
Detectives arrested an 18-year-old Winsford man on Sunday and as the Guardian went to press were still questioning him after being granted a 36 hour extension by magistrates.
There were around 40 people in the Dee Way area at the time of the stabbing and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
A spokeswoman said: "Many of these people may have been aware of what was going on and may have information which could assist police.
"We are asking these people to come forward and to make contact with the incident room."
Police are also asking for residents' help to find two items which would help them with their enquiry.
The spokeswoman said: "We believe a man's top, possibly dark coloured and bloodstained, may have been abandoned in Dee Way or the surrounding area shortly after the attack.
"We also believe the murder weapon, a knife with a light coloured handle with a seven to nine in blade and similar to a domestic kitchen knife, has also been abandoned, discarded or hidden in the area.
"We are asking residents in the area to check their gardens, bushes and outhouses and if they find the discarded items to make contact as a matter of urgency with the police incident room.
"We request that if you do find these items you do not touch them but you do notify police immediately."
Anyone who witnessed the stabbing or has any information should call the murder incident room on 01244 614261.
