PLANS to completely overhaul the dilapidated Lostock Gralam train station are on track to benefit from a significant cash boost.

As a result of plans for the Lostock triangle development, rubber-stamped in January, Vale Royal Borough Council has £185,000 to invest in the train station, which has been in a state of ruin for several years.

On Monday night Phil Bamford, development plan manager for VRBC, told Lostock Parish Council the authority is now working alongside Network Rail, train operator Northern Railways and a private developer to see how the station can be brought up to scratch.

He said Northern Railways is carrying out a £3,000 feasibility study to see how the cash injection could best be spent to ensure the development keeps going forward.

He said: "We're looking at costing up absolutely everything we can get on that station such as CCTV, disabled access, help points, notice boards, shelters and seats.

"The developer, who currently owns the majority of the train station, is looking to develop car parking and hopes to add a couple of small employment units."

The study will take at least two months to compile but once it is completed the parish council and local community will be consulted on how they would like to see the money invested.

Councillors accepted the proposals were a positive step forward but concerns were sparked about the cost of bringing the station into line with the Disability Discrimination Act, which could run to more than £100,000.

Mr Bamford explained Network Rail had overall legal responsibility for ensuring the station complied with DDA regulations.

Clr Nick Goulding said: "If it has got legal responsibility for that then it should be up to them to pay for that. We shouldn't be paying any money when it's not our legal responsibility."
