AS both a cyclist and a motorist, I sympathise with JH Carroll after her interesting ride on the pillion of a motorcycle, Guardian, June 28.

I cycle because I enjoy the exercise and fairly fresh air and the exercise helps to keep me fit, trim and mentally alert. Also it cuts down on traffic congestion, pollution and saves precious fuel.

I find most motorists and lorry drivers to be considerate and polite, but greatly fear the minority who suddenly turn left or right with no signals.

While realising that they need all their energy to push that accelerator down hard, closely followed by the brake pedal, I wish they would spare a little energy to indicate their intentions to other road users.

We will all progress more safely and more quickly on the roads, if we look at driving as an area where we can cooperate with other road users, rather than competing as to who can be first. We will have happier journeys too.

Signalling intentions, especially a left turn at roundabouts, helps other road users and can help to speed up the flow so that all road users benefit.
