THE plan to close the inpatients wards at the Victoria Infirmary is becoming even more of a cruel farce.

I attended an NHS consultation meeting at Crewe, and was astonished to hear that at the same time as inflicting this closure on the sick and elderly of the Northwich area, the NHS authorities are intending to open a hospital with the same number of beds in Winsford.

Even by their own admission, the trust managers' figures do not make sense. They say it will cost £2m to make ready the existing, abandoned, building in Winsford, which, as I understand it, is exactly the amount needed to upgrade and save the wards at the Victoria Infirmary in Northwich. That does not take into account the hardship to patients, relatives and the staff at Northwich who will be losing their jobs.

It also appears that the NHS bureaucrats are willing to write off the tradition of excellent patient care built up over many decades.

Incidentally, Winsford has about two-thirds the population of Northwich, and is much closer to Leighton Hospital at Crewe.

I would be grateful if you could make your readers aware of this crazy and disgraceful plan.
