OFFENDERS at Risley prison were offered free health advice from experts last week as part of Men's Health Week.

Prisoners received advice about sexual and mental health and employment problems as well as body fat, blood pressure and hand hygiene checks.

They were also able to try out some alternative therapy taster sessions including art therapy and a health quiz.

Energetic prisoner Jason Harrison, aged 36, ran 100 laps around one of the exercise yards with the help of officer Andy Matthews in a bid to raise £300 for charity.

The event was a fun and interactive way to raise awareness of men's health. Many men have difficulty discussing health issues and Men's Health Week worked as a vehicle to break down some of these barriers.

Katie Roberts, Warrington Primary Care Trust's health improvement specialist, said: "We thought it was important to raise the profile and awareness of men's health. There are many men within our communities who have difficulty talking about health issues and this was a fun and interactive way to break down some of those barriers.

"This work acts as a vehicle for the promotion of health and wellbeing and sends a message about healthy lifestyles to be of a broader social benefit which can reach beyond the boundaries of the establishment."

The organisations involved on the day included Warrington PCT, Warrington Disability Partnership, Trading Standards, Community Food Workers, Job Centre Plus, and Citizens Advice Bureau.
