AN accident blackspot in Crewe has undergone major road improvements in an effort to halt the number of casualties.

The work was carried out following a flurry of traffic accidents involving people crossing the road and reports of dozens more near misses.

Borough councillor for the Valley ward Bob Jones this week welcomed the new road safety improvements to Victoria Avenue and Queens Park Drive.

Cheshire County Council and their road safety consultants published a plan in August to tackle the problem.

The proposals included the addition of a pelican crossing and other safety measures. And as part of the overall upgrade, improvements have also been made to the local bus stop network.

Cllr Jones said: "These road safety improvements are long overdue.

"They will improve safety for pedestrians and visitors to Queens Park which is attended by thousands of people each and every year.

"I also welcome the investment in the local bus network and I hope that pensioners will now be able to use their new free bus passes at a convenient location."

Borough councillor Roy Cartlidge said the project had been a joint effort between neighbouring ward councillors who had paved the way for the improvements.

He said they would help to slow down traffic speeds at peak times and give residents in the area a chance to make good use of this improved bus service network.

He said: "The bus service is very well used and this can only complement and improve upon it.

"Residents have requested these works and improvements, which Labour councillors have promised and delivered."
