A SCHOOL has turned old Yellow Pages into pounds by topping a recycling league table for the phone directories.
Pupils at Weston Point Primary School, in Runcorn, have been competing against 12 other schools in Halton to collect the most phone books, which will be recycled as part of the Yellow Woods Challenge 2006.
The school managed to recycle 516 copies, which worked out at 5.11 per pupil. This impressive haul helped them to scoop £300 in prize money.
In second place was Moore Primary School, which won £200 for recycling 4.61 per pupil and in third place with 3.9 per pupil was Pewithall Primary School, which won £100.
The top six schools also get a pack of tree saplings to plant in their grounds.
The Yellow Woods Challenge 2006 is a nationwide campaign to get young people recycling to save landfill space. The schools are also helping to replace trees cut down with Yellow Pages matching every pound won by schools and donating the total to The Woodland Trust's 'Tree For All' campaign.
