THE recent article in the World, June 21, 'Do your bit', reported that Halton Council is supporting the United Nations' World Environment Day this year by urging people to support the European 'You control climate change' campaign.
Aside from issuing this news article, exactly what is the council doing? It doesn't even have anything on its second rate website.
It is all very well for Cllr Harris to say this is a practical campaign that everyone can contribute to to reduce climate change, but what about the council's environmental record?
The council only pays lip service to the environment, as is evident by the growing vote for alternatives such as the Green Party in Widnes.
The European campaign slogan is 'turn down, switch off, recycle, walk'.
This highlights, for instance, how people should do more walking instead of using the car.
Are Cllr Harris and the council joking? How many expensive cars does the council provide free of charge or on reduced leases for council staff in the many council car parks? There aren't many bikes about are there?
Just look at the municipal building car park, stuffed with hundreds of expensive cars, many subsidised by the council tax.
This is the same council tax that it struggles to reduce every year.
You only have to watch the number of council staff in Widnes who are so lazy they drive to Asda from Kingsway instead of walking - and most of them are well-heeled women!
These probably include the same staff that are urging the public to take more exercise, etc.
There is a word to describe people like that - hypocrites.
