PENKETH has become the first place to benefit from a new CCTV camera scheme.

A portable camera has been fitted in Honiton Way because of the amount of anti-social behaviour.

The shops and surrounding area have become a hotspot for calls about nuisance youths and vandalism.

It is one of two portable cameras bought by the Safer Warrington Partnership to combat crime and disorder - and Penketh is the first place to benefit from them.

The camera has been installed above a building for the foreseeable future to act as a deterrent and to gather evidence against known troublemakers.

They are monitored either by the Safer Warrington Partnership or from a remote viewing station.

They form part of a three-year project to use portable CCTV cameras.

Sgt Chris Unsworth, from Great Sankey Police Station, said: "The west Warrington police are very pleased at this news and it will be a great help in trying to reduce the number of offences in Honiton Way.

"The installation of the camera will enable us to better tackle crime and disorder."

Clr Linda Dirir, who also sits on Penketh Parish Council, said: "This is wonderful news.

"The parish council supports anything that helps with anti-social behaviour and crime in Honiton Square."
