A CHESS computer will be looking to beat the human opposition when Penketh Chess Club starts its summer knockout tournament next Thursday.
The club has a copy of the Fritz programme that runs on home computers - and it can beat even top Grandmasters.
"We will have to handicap him by giving him less time to decide on his moves" said Martin Cooksey, club secretary.
Chris Haggett, tournament organiser, said: "While Fritz is not as strong as Deep Blue, which beat Gary Kasparov, he is expected to prove a formidable opponent.
"What does he think of his chances? At present, he is sitting in a corner of the chess club saying nothing!"
Anyone wishing to take part in the tournament should contact Chris on 724008.
The club meets each Thursday night at 8pm, at the Penketh and Great Sankey Royal British Legion, in Greystone Road.
