A DAVID and Goliath battle is under way between anxious residents and a global phone network.

People living near the green off Higher Knutsford Road, Stockton Heath, believe they are in a losing battle after mobile giants 3G submitted plans to erect a communications mast on the land.

The proposed mobile phone pole would stand 12.5 metres if approved by Warrington Borough Council.

Kenneth Crook, who lives on Higher Knutsford Road, said: "Residents are obviously very unhappy about it because this area is prone to road accidents, which have caused road signs only five metres from the proposed mast to be knocked down."

Other disgruntled people say the mast would be an eyesore.

"This does appear to be David against Goliath," added Mr Crook.

Applications to site the mast at alternative sites in Grappenhall have already been refused by the borough council after deciding it would have a detrimental visual impact on the area.

Meanwhile, parents whose

children attend clubs and activities near the proposed spot say they fear the proposal could be damaging to their health.

"The telephone companies tell us there is no health risk but I understand that cubs, brownies, and mums and tots groups meet at the church hall, and most parents and families are concerned.

"This could damage the numbers who use the church, and hence the finances of one of the most idyllic in Stockton Heath," added Dr Crook.

Stockton Heath Parish Council has already voiced its concerns over the development.
