POLICE are warning residents to be on their guard against car criminals after more than 20 incidents were reported in a month.

Officers have become increasingly concerned over the spate of car crime and are urging everyone to step up security.

CAT officer Sgt James Rowe said: "It's clear there are a number of offenders who are actively targeting vehicles.

"They are heading out intent on breaking into cars and stealing them or from them.

"People must be on their guard at all times to reduce the risk of becoming a victim."

Police have not uncovered any pattern to the crimes and are asking people living in all areas of the town to be vigilant.

Motorists are being given advice by police in a bid to make stealing a car as difficult as possible for criminals.

Sgt Rowe said: "Don't leave items on display, make sure all security devices are fitted and activated and remove stereo fascias and satellite navigation systems.

"It's all pretty much common sense stuff which takes a few minutes to do but has the potential to save hundreds, if not thousands of pounds."

CAT officers and targeted patrol teams have been made aware of the spate and are keeping a close eye out for known offenders and suspicious activity.

Sgt Rowe said: "I'm confident the steps we are taking will help to deliver the message that we are watching and offenders will be caught.

"However motorists have a huge part to play in reducing the number of these incidents and they have a responsibility to protect their property."
