LIKE many people who read the story about the desecration of a memorial for PC Tony Heaton, I find the actions of the people responsible difficult to comprehend.
But perhaps instead of concentrating on the negative aspect of this crime we should remember that the person who left the pig's head at the memorial is the kind of person PC Heaton dedicated his life to bringing to justice.
Whoever has done this has attempted to tarnish the reputation of PC Heaton and the police force but in reality, they have achieved the opposite.
The actions of this person have only served to reinforce the feeling within right thinking members of society that police play a vital role in protecting us from people who are capable of committing such a heinous act.
Take a moment to think about why someone could possibly want to commit this crime.
I would suggest the likely motive is resentment for what PC Heaton stood for and the excellent work he did during his life to protect law abiding people.
We are all shocked and appalled by this incident but some comfort should be found in the fact there are many other officers like PC Tony Heaton working every day to make where we live a safer place.
