BOMBARDIER in Crewe has scooped an £85million contract as part of two mega money deals with leading transport company First Great Western.
The big-money deal will see Crewe workers carrying out the overhaul and technical development of Great Western's high-speed train bogies for up to 10 years.
Bombardier has also negotiated a £53million deal to renovate 405 high-speed train trailer cars at its Derby and Ilford bases.
Although both companies have expressed their delight at the deals, workers union AMICUS is remaining tight-lipped about the potential impact on jobs.
Local AMICUS representative Mick Roberts told the Guardian: "It has come at a time when we are discussing some major changes so we don't want to say much at the moment.
"It is good that we have this work in the order book but we are not saying that this is celebration time because there are other issues that we need to address.
"The work force are having to consider major changes. We're keeping our opinions to ourselves and the workers have some major decisions."
In the UK's rail transportation industry, Bombardier is a leader in the manufacturing, refurbishment and maintenance of rolling stock, with a total workforce of over 4,000 people.
Commenting on the announcement of the contract, chief country representative Colin Walton said: "This win is excellent news for our workforces at Derby, Ilford and Crewe.
"Our employees will ensure that First Great Western receives a first-class service from Bombardier."
