A TAXI driver has died and five people have been seriously injured after a horrific head-on smash in Runcorn last night (Monday).
The accident happened on the Daresbury Expressway close to the turn-off for Pitts Heath Lane, Sandymoor, shortly after 9.30pm.
A 41-year-old local man was driving his Citroen Xsara containing a 48-year-old backseat passenger east along the A558 when it was in collision with a silver Peugeot 306 containing four teenagers heading towards Runcorn.
Emergency services raced to the scene but the cabbie suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
His passenger, a Warrington man, suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.
The Peugeot's occupants - two males and two females, all aged between 14 and 18 and from Halewood - all suffered serious injuries and are said to be in 'poorly but stable' conditions in hospital.
Cheshire Police are investigating the smash, which happened in wet and gloomy conditions, and are appealing for witnesses to call them on 01244-613925.
