THOUSANDS of people in Lymm have signed a petition to try to save the village sorting office.
Since the office, situated in Bridgewater Street, was first threatened earlier this year, members of the Communication Workers Union have been fighting to save the jobs based at the site.
Royal Mail has guaranteed that the counter services at the post office will stay for the year, but has been unable to give any such guarantees about the sorting office. This week union staff say they have received 515 petitions from people in Lymm with more than 2,600 signatures as well as hundreds of e-mails. All want the sorting office to stay.
Dave Kennedy, from the union, said: "The problem we have is that our staff still have uncertainty over their futures. What the management is saying does nothing to create confidence that the long term future is secure.
"We have written to Helen Southworth MP to ask for her support. We want her to get an unequivocal guarantee that the service will remain. That is what people want."
