A HAVE-a-go hero managed to stop an armed robbery at a Birchwood newsagent, but ended up getting injured himself.

Martins newsagents is to install a security guard in the shop after it was attacked for the second time in 10 days on Sunday.

Two masked men entered the store, on Admirals Road, at 9.40pm armed with a machete knife and demanded money.

Cheshire Police say a member of

the public intervened but during a scuffle, he was left with a slight cut to his stomach. An alarm, installed after the first robbery, was sounded and the robbers fled the scene empty handed.

In a separate incident on Wednesday, June 7, a man entered the store armed with a kitchen knife and threatened the 47-year-old manager before escaping with cash after he ran behind the counter.

DS David Walsh, from the northern area robbery unit, said that at the moment there was nothing to link the two incidents and it may just have been a case of bad luck.

He said: "At the moment it seems that they are separate incidents.

"Obviously everyone involved in it has been left shocked."

The man with the machete was described as 5ft 7ins tall and of a slim build. He was wearing all black and gloves.

The second man is small and stocky, wearing a dark hooded top with a red rim and a scarf covering his face.

Anyone with any information should call DS Walsh on 01244 613730.
