THE Great Wall of China might be the only man-made structure visible from space, but on Friday night it may well have been joined by a sea of pink as 1,200 women took to the streets for St Rocco's.
The first ever St Rocco's Starlight Walk proved to be an overwhelming success as the walkers made their way across the town guided by 120 volunteer marshals.
And even those who didn't take part supported the event as residents across the town stood outside their homes waiting for the women to pass so they could offer encouragement and refreshments - and town centre revellers left their drinks at the bar to rush outside and make a donation.
Pauline Jones, who took part in the walk, said: "I am sure I speak for all the walkers when I say how safe we felt, in need of nothing and especially urged on by the cheers of encouragement from the marshals. What surprised me was how many young men and women had given up their precious Friday night to help out."
Eighty per cent of the walkers completed the half-marathon by coming full circle and walking back into Victoria Park where they were greeted with the strains of What Have You Done Today To Make You Feel Proud?
The final woman to complete the colossal 13-mile trek with the aid of her walking stick was Christine Anderton, whose time was an impressive five hours and 19 minutes.
But it was all too much for former 'Queen of the Jungle' Kerry Katona, who, despite pledging to take part, left the party early once the walkers set off.
