A WOMAN was sexually assaulted in the aftermath of the celebrations of an England World Cup game.

Three men followed the 19-year-old from Bridge Street before one of them attacked her near the Spiritualist Church, on Mersey Street.

The incident happened after the teenager had been out to watch the England versus Trinidad and Tobago match in the World Cup earlier in the evening.

It is believed to have taken place at around 12.20am in the early hours of Friday morning.

The woman has been able to give police a description of her attacker, who she said was white, about 5ft 10in tall, around 25 years old, and of medium build.

He had dark spiky and scruffy hair, with a pale face.

He was wearing a horizontally stripped t-shirt with blue jeans and brown loafers.

There were two other men with him at the time, the first was described as white, 5ft 11in with brown hair cut in a short, back and sides style.

The third man was described as about 5ft 9in tall, white, of stocky build and with a skinhead.
