A GIANT bronze statue of four jovial children is the star attraction of a new Chinese friendship garden beside Runcorn Town Hall.

The huge sculpture, a gift from Tongling City, Halton's twin town in China, is based on an enlarged replica of ancient artwork now displayed at the Chinese National Museum.

Dating back 300 years, the statue was given to newly-weds to ensure they had many children to support them in old age. Now it symbolises joy, happiness, peace and prosperity.

"We are nine years into our friendship agreement with Tongling," Halton Mayor Cllr John Swain told guests at the opening ceremony. "It is wonderful to see it blossom in this way. The garden is absolutely superb."

Gong Jianzhong, consul general of the People's Republic of China, unveiled the 700 sq m garden. It was designed and created by contractors and will be maintained by council staff.

A red pergola, arch, walkway, seating and traditional Chinese plants and flowers, including the country's national flower, the peony, are featured in the oriental garden, commissioned by Halton Council.

The Mayor of Tongling City, Mr Zhang Qingjun, sent this message: "We are all proud of the achievements through the friendly links that have been developed in education, culture, sports, health and economy between Halton and Tongling.

"The Chinese friendship garden will help promote this ever-growing friendship.
