A MIDDLEWICH councillor is hoping he can help to slow traffic on a busy town road.

County councillor Mark Dickson, of Hereford Way, is investigating reducing the national speed limit on Centurion Way to 40mph.

He said: "A lot of schoolchildren walk up and down the road and joggers use it but there are an awful lot of cars whacking it down there, especially over the weekend.

"I'm looking to see if there's a case to have that limit reduced to 40mph where the children walk and where they congregate when the bus stops and drops off."

Centurion Way serves the Kinderton Manor housing estate and forms a major part of the route for traffic travelling between Middlewich and the M6.

Clr Dickson said: "There have been no accidents there yet but it's prevention on my part.

"With the number of people who use that road for leisure, cars are probably a bit too quick.

"I'm anticipating the problems rather than waiting for them to happen, especially with the lorries that use that road - they could do with slowing a bit."

But Middlewich police said they did not see the area as a particular hot spot.

PC Mike Senior, from the town CAT team, said: "I'm not aware of any major incidents as a result of speeding traffic.

"It's quite a fast stretch of road but has good visibility as it's only built up on one side.

"The footpath there is one of the widest in Middlewich and is a reasonable distance away from the traffic.

"The roundabouts also slow traffic down."
