THE husband of a former Winsford Town Mayor is hoping to mark the first anniversary of her death by raising money for charity.

Brenda Mooney died on June 20 last year aged 77 and her husband Harry has decided to raise money for St Luke's Cheshire Hospice, which cared for her during her final days.

Harry, 85, of Knights Meadow, has bought two footballs from Liverpool Football Club, had them signed by the current squad and will now raffle them to raise money.

He said: "Brenda was such a wonderful woman and she did an awful lot for the town during her life that I want people to remember her.

"This seems like a really good idea because it keeps Brenda's memory alive and also raises money for St Luke's."

Brenda was Winsford Town Mayor in 2001 and was governor of three schools, treasurer of Winsford Pensioners' Association and a volunteer at St Luke's.

Harry, who was once a scout at Liverpool Football Club during the Shankly era, is now encouraging people to go to the White Lion on Delamere Street and the Top House on Wharton Road and take part in the raffle.

He said: "I've asked for some more footballs from Liverpool and I'm sure there will be lots of people in Winsford who would love one.

"The footballs are in the pub and people can get their raffle tickets when they go in for a pint.

"I would love to raise a lot of money for St Luke's because they were absolutely marvellous with Brenda shortly before she died.

"I just want to do a little bit to help them."
