ALCOHOL totalling more than £10,000 has been seized from the region's streets in the run up to the World Cup.

The Government Alcohol Misuse Enforcement Campaign figures show 1,085 litres of alcohol were seized in the Western Area, which includes Northwich and Winsford.

This amount is equivalent to 2,170 cans of beer and 1,085 bottles of vodka.

A total of 253 arrests and 77 positive alcohol breath tests were also recorded during the May 8 to June 8 campaign.

Licensing enforcement officer Sgt Alison Wheeler said: "The campaign has been a great success and I would personally like to thank all the CAT officers, licensing industry representatives and partner agencies for their contribution.

"The results have been very pleasing and reassuring.

"The majority of licensees made it clear they take their responsibilities very seriously and there were no worries for us in terms of the way things are being run

"In a handful of places, some minor issues were identified and we have worked with these premises to ensure issues such as sales to underage drinkers, failure to comply with fire regulations and unlicensed door supervision are sorted."

Sgt Wheeler said the clampdown will continue long after the England squad return to home shores.

She added: "We wanted to set the tone for acceptable behaviour in the run up to the World Cup. Now the campaign is over our efforts will continue to ensure the excellent results we have achieved keep on being delivered.

"CAT officers will carry on making arrests, seizing alcohol and issuing on-the-spot fines."

An illegal sale was committed in Winsford during this period and trading standards officers are now considering taking further action.
