FINAL preparations are under way for the 60th Comberbach Rose Fete which takes place this Saturday.

This year's theme is Space Oddity and there will be floats depicting Dr Who? and a rocket launcher.

Star of the day will be Imogen Hughes, 11, who first took part in the retinue as a flower girl at the age of five and will now be crowned Comberbach Rose Queen.

The Comberbach Primary School Pupil, of Senna Lane, who is a member of the school's netball team, enjoys dancing, drama and taking part in productions.

Floats and the parade, which includes visiting queens, assemble on Senna Lane at 1pm where judging will take place. At 1.30pm the procession moves off, arriving at the school field at 2pm where there will be a fancy dress parade, judging and the crowning of the queen.

Other highlights include a school gymnastics display, Carolina's Jazz Band, Ruidogrande Samba Band, Hartford School of Gymnastics, Knock Your Block Off challenge and Star Wars.

And there will also be a variety of stalls including a super slide, bouncy castle and face painting.

A signed letter and life size cut out of Patrick Stewart, captain of the Starship Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation, is up for grabs in a silent auction. Other prizes include tickets to see Warrington Wolves, Chester Zoo, Dunham Massey, a Sunday lunch for two at the Moorings Restaurant in Anderton and a £25 voucher to spent at the Spinner and Bergamot in Comberbach.

There is also a raffle with prizes including tickets for Blackpool Tower, the Anderton Boat Lift, The Lowry and Knowsley Safari Park.

Winners of the scarecrow competition will also receive their prizes.

The original fete took place on Monday, June 10, 1946 and some of the original retinue have been invited back to celebrate the big day.

Steve Howard, one of the organisers, said: "The event was organised by a committee set up to raise funds for a memorial hall after the Second World War.

"We will welcome back some of the retinue that took part all those years ago. And I know that they are looking forward to the reunion."
