A BUDDING young hairdresser is competing for a top apprenticeship award following her work in a Warrington hair salon.

Emma Merritt, who is also a paper girl for Warrington Guardian, has seen off competition from more than 1,000 candidates and is now one of the last 20 people in the running for Apprentice of the Year.

At the moment, Emma helps out at Hairwaves hairdressing salon in Great Sankey where she works a full day every Tuesday.

Emma, aged 15, who attends Great Sankey High School, said: "I was nominated by Kim, one of my workmates from Hairwaves. I enjoy working there and I'd like to do it for a living.

Apprentice of the Year is a programme by Total People, a work-based learning organisation set up in Cheshire in 2001.
