YOUNG diabetics in the town are being given an opportunity to meet others with the same condition and learn more about issues that affect them.
North Cheshire Hospitals NHS Trust has organised a barbecue and social evening tomorrow, Wednesday, between 7pm and 9pm, at Bank Quay Sports and Social Club, Green Street, Warrington.
Susie Prestt, diabetes nurse for young people, said: "We are providing a friendly, informal and fun opportunity for young people to socialise and discuss problems and concerns."
Specialist health care workers will be on hand to offer advice, support and answer questions.
There are currently 90 people aged between 17-25 registered with Warrington Hospital's Young People's diabetes service.
Through regular clinics in the main outpatients department, the service offers clear and concise guidelines on living with diabetes, including advice on diet, exercise, holidays and other lifestyle issues.
An evening diabetes clinic is also available at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Dr Paula Chattington, consultant diabetologist and the lead for the young persons' clinic, said: "Being diagnosed with diabetes is not something most young people and their families consider, so it is a shock and there is an element of fear of the unknown.
"Many find it hard to accept that this is a lifelong condition and just want it to go away. Young people can also be very sensitive about being different from their friends in any way.
"We can show young people that they can manage their diabetes without too much of an impact on their lives, as long as they look after themselves and behave sensibly. We also help their families to let their son or daughter take more responsibility for themselves as they get older and more mature.
