A WARRINGTON businessman has been named an environmental champion for the north west following some impressive initiatives on sustainable development.
David Crawshaw, of United Utilities, was the winner of the Environmental Leadership category at the North West Environment Awards earlier this month.
As United Utilities manager, Mr Crawshaw led the Landcare initiative, which transformed neglected land into community green spaces and has invested more than £1million into 85 projects in the north west.
Mr Crawshaw said: "The north west is a study in contrasts.
"We have some of the most nationally significant habitats for wildlife and yet a quarter of England's derelict land is also found in the region."
He is also responsible for the hilltop-to-tap programme, dedicated to managing the land in such a way to improve drinking water.
Derek Norman, chairman of the north west environmental protection committee, said: "The judges rated David very highly on his commitment, innovation, impact and leadership.
"His quiet and caring approach has made a significant improvement to the region's environment."
