WITH the World Cup under way football memories in Winsford have come flooding back and one woman is appealing for help to find out about her late husband's sporting successes.

Barbara Whitney, 69, of Delamere Rise, has found a picture of her husband, Ted, celebrating with his teammates but is unsure why it was taken.

She said: "I would really like to know what it was the team had won and which team it was that he was playing for.

"There are a few trophies on the picture so it seems like they were a very successful team and it would be really nice for me to know what they were for."

Ted, who died six years ago, followed football all his life and was a keen supporter of Winsford United.

Barbara said: "I first met Ted when I was 14 and he was always very keen playing and watching football.

"I would love to know a little bit more about who he played for.

"I know he played for Cheshire Boys at some point and whoever he played for won the Northwich and District Junior League in1953-54."

Barbara's appeal follows a Flashback appeal in the Guardian on June 7 when John Brown asked for information on his High Street Secondary School team.

Barbara said: "I saw that in Flashback and it made me think that there must be a great number of people still in Winsford who may be able to help.

"Football was so important to people back then and Winsford United were followed by a lot more people.

"I know Ted played for Winsford United reserves at one point and I think that must have been a very proud moment for him."

Barbara recognises three faces on the photograph - Brian Hamlett, Barry Fleet and Jackie Hunt.
