GREAT Britain fighter Scott Pickering has returned from Jersey with two gold medals in ju-jitsu.

Despite weighing only 75kg, Pickering, from Orford, won both the under 80kg and under 90kg categories at the World Council of Ju-Jitsu Championships.

The 29-year-old triumphed in 11 of his 12 fights against competitors representing England, Jersey and Guernsey to secure victory in the Channel Islands for the third successive year.

He said: "I was made up because I didn't expect to win both categories. I was fighting people that weighed more than me in the under 90kg category and that was hard. But you just need to be fast because they are slow."

As well as being a second dan black belt in ju-jitsu, Pickering is a blue belt in Brazilian ju-jitsu, which is regarded as a tougher discipline.

He also recently took on a Lithuanian in Liverpool in an ultimate fighting champion contest, which was fought in a cage and combined several martial art forms, but was defeated.

"It is completely different to ju-jitsu," he said.

"I went into it from a ju-jitsu background and my opponent was very good with his punching and kicking, but hopefully I'll fight again at some point."
