IT has been a funny sort of a week on the Warrington Anglers' Association scene.
Plenty of carp were caught in midweek at Grey Mist Mere and Cecily Mill Pool but as the hot spell continued the carp at the Mist went into spawning mode and could be clearly seen at the car park end far too preoccupied to feed!
The warm weather seems to affect humans in strange ways too. Two drunken individuals on Saturday morning decided to join in and have a dip with the carp on one of our waters.
Since the recent tragic death in a north west river of a young boy who was swimming with his friends, the media has gone into overdrive warning of the dangers of jumping into cold water on hot days and the hidden dangers in lakes, rivers and canals, especially when mixed with alcohol.
Warrington police attended and soon resolved Saturday's situation. Tempting as the water might look, you don't get a second chance at drowning.
Cecily Mill was very quiet last week and members rang to express their concern. During hot spells the shallow water soon becomes warm and brackish. Low oxygen levels follow and the fish understandably don't want to play.
However, a refreshing downpour on Monday morning seemed to have helped the situation and fish were being caught again by the afternoon.
We are continuing to monitor the shallow waters closely during this hot spell but please call if you spot any problems.
Ron Williams was pleased with his two 6lb bream and two carp of around 10lbs, caught on a bait new to him called Lincolnshire spicy crab meat. He was pleased with the result and is going back to try it again as soon as he can.
The carp in Sandiway have begun spawning and, judging by the fry from other species which have already spawned, this year could prove to be an excellent breeding year.
I have had a call from the Environment Agency to say that a faulty gate on Howley Weir is causing problems and may result in low river levels. The repairs should be finished by tomorrow, Friday, and the river back to normal by Saturday.
