IN summer the public are often told about hose pipe bans and the danger of wasting water.

But in Kingswood it is electricity that is being wasted according to councillor David Earl.

The councillor took a survey of the estate and was shocked to find that 10 per cent of streetlights came on in daylight.

He said: "I drove around the

estate and out of 200 street lights, 28 were on in broad daylight and a couple of them were badly broken.

"The concern is that you have 10 per cent on during the day - it must be a waste of money.

"And regardless of that it is bad environmentally."

The Westbrook councillor says he has put a request into the council lighting department.

He said: "It is a worry because the public perception from residents is that we are wasting money.

"Driving around on a Saturday afternoon we have nearly 30 lights burning in a relatively small area.

"As yet I have not received a response."

Phil Johnson, Warrington Borough Council's head of service transportation, said: "Lighting repairs are carried out on all lighting units, including 'day burners', lights lit in the day.

"Lights that are 'day burning' are a normal fault on the photo electric control unit (photo cell) that detects the onset on darkness with reduced lighting levels and switches on the lighting unit.

"This device is designed so that if it fails, it fails in the 'on' position to ensure the safety of road users at night."
