THE dangers facing children who have accidents is being highlighted in a campaign for Child Safety Week.

Halton Borough Council's Health and Safety Team are backing the campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of accidents to children. This year the national Child Safety Week will take place from Monday, June 19 until Sunday, June 25.

Accidents are one of the biggest causes of child death in the UK.

Last year around 300 children and young people were killed as a result of an accident, and that figure is higher than family abuse and neglect or being murdered by strangers. It is also the biggest cause for children to visit hospital with more than 100,000 children needing hospital treatment every year.

Keeping your children safe doesn't have to be a big deal and doing simple things such as moving toys off the stairs, keeping medicines and alcohol locked away and checking your smoke alarm every week can make a difference.

To highlight the week the Health and Safety Team is running a competition to win one of 15 lockable medicine cabinets as prizes.
