MEASURES to turn youngsters off alcohol and on to positive activities are proving a big success.
Letters are being sent to the parents of youths found drinking under age.
There are regular visits to licensed premises, with test purchases being carried out at off-licences to identify anyone selling alcohol to under 18s.
Neighbourhood dedicated officers and community support officers have been to schools to offer advice on under-age and binge drinking, bullying, personal safety and Internet safety.
Detached youth workers have been encouraging young people on the streets of Newton and Earlestown to make use of activities in their area.
More than 700 young people are using the Youth Only Zone (YOZ), based at at Selwyn Jones Leisure Centre every Saturday night.
The Youth and Sports Department will be carrying out a diverse programme of activities in Mesnes Park each Friday between 2pm and 7pm over the six-week school break.
Helena Housing has made a bid for funding to provide a youth shelter at Mesnes Park.
