IKEA is changing to biodegradable carrier bags that cost 10p each.
The store will charge 5p for its existing bags until they run out, then from September will switch to the biodegradable bags.
It is also promoting the use of its re-useable blue bags, which can be bought for 25p - equivalent to the cost price.
Charlie Browne, Ikea environment manager, said: "We want to discourage customers from one-off use and help customers make an environmentally friendly choice."
"Money raised by charging for plastic bags will be donated to the organisation Community Forests."
