I FEEL I must comment on the two articles printed recently.
One was in Points of View, written by Tom Higgins from Great Sankey, who wrote about Community Support Officers, their cost, and how they are used.
Although I agree with some of his points, I wish our area was as fortunate as Great Sankey. Living near the town centre, we have no backing from a parish council, we have only one CSO on duty at a time, and her area has just been increased to twice the size of Great Sankey.
She is employed by the police, told where to go and what to do by the police and is in a car. I attend all the police forums and for the past six years have been asking when we will have the 'bobby' back on the beat again.
The other article commented on what a good reaction CSOs were receiving from the public of Great Sankey. It said also that CSOs were being trained to drive police cars. This is where I agree with Mr Higgins - CSOs should be on foot, on a recognised beat.
Train them in dog handling - yes - car driving - no.
Great Sankey Parish Council pays for the CSO and should insist they remain on foot. Something the whole of Warrington really needs.
