PLANS are in place for a glorious rose fete in Byley on Saturday, which should even keep football fans happy.
The 23rd Byley Rose Fete will start earlier than usual this year to avoid clashing with England's first World Cup match at 3pm. The procession will leave Shanty Farm, on Moss Lane, at 12.30pm instead of its accustomed time of 1.30pm. Led by a piper, it will make its way to church field, following a new route this year to avoid crossing the busy B5081, and 10-year-old Rebecca Williams will be crowned rose queen at 12.30pm.
Other activities and events taking place on the day are a display from Renaissance Dance Troupe, vintage tractors and machinery, and a variety of traditional stalls and games.
Organiser Christine Hankey said: "I think the fete is as popular as ever and is a chance for the children to shine - it's the kids day really."
All proceeds will go towards St John the Evangelist Church.
