ALARMED residents will be able to venture into Middlewich without fear thanks to a personal safety initiative by town police.

The CAT team has 300 free attack alarms to give out to residents who feel vulnerable and unsafe walking the streets of Middlewich after a survey showed people's concerns in the area.

PC Nicola Rimmer said: "We had £200 to spend on the alarms as the whole point of the funding was to provide something that will benefit the community.

"From the public perception surveys we did before the Community Action Meeting, held in April, personal safety was a concern that came from a number of residents.

"Personal attack alarms will reduce that fear of crime and fear of attack and assault.

"People feel intimidated when they're out in the evening and this will hopefully improve their confidence."

Bobbies will hand out alarms to elderly residents as a priority, starting with the Laxton Way and Chadwick Fields areas, before giving them out to any resident on a first come first served basis.

PC Rimmer said: "People feel intimidated by youths and the elderly population in particular have concerns about personal safety."

Pam Farrell, scheme manager at Bembridge Court, said: "I think it's a really good idea - especially giving them to the elderly. Anything that helps to allay fears and give people the confidence to go out is important as that's what people should be doing."

Anyone who would like an alarm should ring the CAT team's voicemail number on 0845 458 6382 and leave their contact details.
