CONCERNS have been raised that Winsford's heritage is disappearing after another building was demolished on the old High Street.

The building, which used to be a second hand shop, was torn down last week and two councillors believe it is another piece of history consigned to the scrap heap.

Town and borough councillor Peter Gannon said: "This building remained the same since it was built in the 1800s so it is a real shame for it to have been knocked down.

"To see it demolished is disappointing because in Winsford I feel we should be protecting our history.

"The building had not been altered since it was built but it has now been lost for ever. The heart is being ripped out of the old High Street area."

The building has been vacant for around 12 months and now Clr Gannon is hoping the land will be used to further the Winsford Gateway scheme.

He said: "I'm not sure what the plans are for the land as yet but I hope it will be a development that enhances the old High Street.

"This area is part of the Gateway scheme but I don't think too much progress has been made so far.

"The old High Street is an extremely important part of Winsford and people should not forget about it. There are some wonderful buildings down there such as Pimlotts that have so much potential and we really need to look at how we can return the old High Street to its former glory."

Fellow Clr Des Worthington added: "We will have to keep an eye on what is going on because important decisions have to be made on the old High Street.

"I would like to know when they are going to do this Winsford Gateway."
