I READ with interest an article in the May 31 edition of the Guardian about the launch of a new campaign by Vale Royal Borough Council called SMYLE (Supporting My Local Environment).
On the face of it, very laudable.
When we look down we will see clean streets, free from litter. When we look around us we will see beautiful countryside, free from abandoned vehicles and fly tipping. But should we look up, bearing in mind by this time a household waste incinerator - kindly given backing by Cheshire County Council - could be operational, then raining down on us will be a cocktail of serious toxic pollutants, some carcinogenic.
Responsible citizens respecting their environment? I think not.
To me, supporting my local environment should be more to do with protecting the quality of the air that I breathe, rather than tidying up litter.
Quoting Clr Mark Stocks, lead councillor for environmental policy: "Tomorrow's climate is today's greatest environmental challenge." Hear, hear.
