A FUGITIVE surviving in the wilderness for months was finally trapped - by a TV aerial!
A tame Harris hawk had to be rescued by firefighters after the leather leash on its foot became entangled in the metal wire.
The drama unfolded in Rawcliffe Close, Farnworth in Widnes at 10.30pm on Saturday.
"It was difficult because the bird was attempting to fly away," said watch manager Brian Cadwallader.
"Firefighters covered the bird while they removed the leather leash from the aerial."
Firefighters Pat McBride, Russ Barratt and Chris Derkin climbed up ladders to reach the distraught bird, with guidance from RSPCA animal collection officer Gail Platt.
Her colleague, Derek Hanson had spent several days with her, trying to catch it.
He said: "He kept flying from tree to tree. We think he may have escaped about 18 months ago."
Farnworth residents raised the alarm after spotting the hawk flying Marshes Lane and Derby Lane.
This bird of prey is being cared for in a sanctuary. Call 08705-555 999 if you think it's yours.
