RESIDENTS in Glazebury have been keeping their fingers crossed in hope that it does not rain too much - but their prayers may finally have been answered.

Villagers say their homes and pedestrians are severely sprayed with water every time it rains on Warrington Road because the drains are blocked and the borough council has not yet repaired them.

At the last meeting of the Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council, villager George Rawer attended on behalf of a number of concerned residents and called for action to be taken.

He told councillors: "When it rains there are 14 drains where the villagers and the houses get drenched, it is just like running a gauntlet."

He said the issue had been a problem for a couple of years and Warrington Borough Council had 'forgotten' the village.

John Williams, highways maintenance manager for the borough council, said work was planned for the next few weeks.

He said: "The council's street services department carries out a programme of cleansing and also responds to reports from members of the public about blocked drains or similar problems.

"Any major problems with blocked drains are reported to the highways department where they are included on a list of blocked gullies, prioritised and programmed for remedial works.

"Following a number of reports from members of the public, street services did carry out cleansing of some of the gullies along the A574 Warrington Road in June.

"The remaining gullies require traffic management measures in order to be cleansed and are programmed to be cleaned within the next few weeks.

"The completion of the cleansing works programme will identify if additional structural works are required, this will then determine the next course of action. Any residents with any further reports for this area should contact 442506."
