SIX visitors attended our September meeting. To celebrate the 90th birthday of the WI and the 85th birthday of our federation, there is to be a service in Chester Cathedral on November 15. We had a decorated cake as part of the birthday celebration!
Our speaker Beryl Hewson and her cousin, Ken, gave a talk about antique jewellery. We were all fascinated by their display. We saw clay and spittle ornaments worn by cave dwelling people, which became more sophisticated with the development of fire and dye made by boiling plants in water. We also saw jewels worn by a skeleton found buried very many years ago in the Isle of Man, to those worn by Victorian ladies as muff chains.
Every possible stone was used and shown to us and we were indeed spellbound. The competition for a piece of silver was won by E Boylin with L Buff and I Linaker runners-up.
The next meeting will be on October 24 at Grappenhall Methodist Hall. Visitors welcome.
