AN action plan to safeguard the future of Earlestown Town Hall is being drawn up.

But a councillor has warned that the townsfolk must be consulted before any decision is made on the way forward.

St. Helens Council is looking at options to refurbish and re-develop the 113-year-old Earlestown Town Hall.

Clr John Fletcher, executive member for urban regeneration, said: "The council recognises the importance of this landmark building and its strategic position as a community focal point.

"Parts of the building are in a poor condition due to movement in the structure and accommodation falls well short of modern day requirements.

"Once a preferred scheme has been agreed the council will be actively seeking a development partner to progress the initiative."

The council said they will be consulting with Newton Heritage Group and that they welcome comments from residents regarding the proposed uses.

Clr Suzanne Knight insists that a public meeting and demonstration must be held, to ensure that the whole community can see detailed plans before making their comments.

She said: "I am hoping the consultation will be much wider than just a discussion with the heritage group.

"If they're going to change the town hall at all then there must be a full consultation with all local groups and the people of Earlestown.

"It's their town hall and they should be part of any decision making process."

The council said that any scheme would be dependant upon securing private sector funding.

Work is likely to include completely renovating the clock tower; cenotaph and Market Street frontages and redeveloping the remainder of the building to provide a range of services.

Clr Knight added: "I welcome anything that will keep Earlestown Town Hall viable and agree that the inside of the town hall has to be modernised to attract businesses, because the current facilities are appalling."
