FURIOUS residents are demanding action after a group of travellers moved on to land near homes and a children's play area.

The travellers went on to a site off Collingtree Avenue on September 25 and residents are now calling for them to be moved on as quickly as possible.

One woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: "They are right next to a children's play area and that just isn't on.

"There are a lot of children living round here and they feel far too intimidated to play there."

The land, located on a housing development known as The Shires, is owned by Woodrow Taylor and residents received letters on Monday informing them that the travellers would be moved on no later than tomorrow, Thursday.

One man, who also wishes to remain anonymous, said: "I think it is a disgrace that this should be allowed to happen and if they are still here after Thursday I will be contacting Woodrow Taylor.

"It was a nice field where children used to play and the vehicles have already churned up the grass."

Residents living on the estate have been told by Woodrow Taylor that they would have to pay for any measures to stop travellers moving on to the land again in the future.

The man said: "They said it would cost £2,500 to put some boulders in to stop them getting on to the land and that we would have to pay for it.

"I don't think it is our responsibility to pay for it but if means we don't get a repeat of this in the future then I'm more than happy to pay whatever it costs."

Woodrow Taylor were unavailable for comment as the Guardian went to press last night, Tuesday.
