CAMPAIGNERS against plans to build an incinerator in Northwich are taking their fight beyond the town's borders in a bid to harness more support.

Lostock Gralam Parish Council and Cheshire Anti-Incinerator Network (CHAIN) will host their second public meeting of the year next week to try to get neighbouring towns and villages involved.

Speakers at the event in Knutsford will include Tatton MP George Osborne, international anti-incineration campaigner Ralph Ryder and CHAIN chairman Brian Cartwright.

Chairman of Lostock Gralam Parish Council Clr Shaun Wells said: "There is still time for more residents to put forward their opinions.

"It is also time that people realised it is not going to affect Lostock and nowhere else."

Mr Osborne vowed to step up his fight against proposals for the incinerator following discussions with parish councillors at the beginning of July.

He said: "I have been involved in campaigning against the incinerator for some time because I don't think it's appropriate either for this area or the people of Lostock."

Next week's meeting was arranged after Mr Osborne called on all opponents to the scheme to coordinate their efforts to be more effective.

Last year the county council revealed plans for five potential sites for an 'energy from waste' plant after they estimated that up to 500,000 tonnes of household rubbish per year could be burned.

The Guardian revealed in August that more than 4,000 people had lobbied Cheshire County Council over its intention to locate the incinerator in Northwich.

Council staff have taken a year to read and log comments about the replacement waste local plan, which is due to be debated by the full council later this month.

The public meeting takes place on Friday, October 14, in the Civic Suite, Knutsford, from 7pm.
