VALE Royal Athletics Club U17s girls are the North of England Road Relay champions.

Stevie Stockton, Hannah Weedall and Laura Lambert took the title after a titanic battle with Rotherham, Sale Leigh, Liverpool, Hull and Morpeth at the Sefton Park event.

The lead changed several times throughout the race, but Vale Royal crossed the line first, eight seconds ahead of Leigh Harriers in second.

Louise Bosson, Lorna Timms and Corinne Kinvig, Vale Royal's second string U17s squad, finished in 18th overall.

Coach Shaun McGrath was delighted with the result.

He said: "It's a hell of an achievement and it's the first time we've won the North of England title.

"To be there and see it was brilliant."

The U17s boys (James Griffiths, Ryan Smith and Glen George) finished in fifth overall while the second string (Lee Davenport, Mike Carroll and Peter Cox) came home in 29th.

Vale Royal's rising stars in the girls U15s team finished in 16th overall, ahead of teams such as Leeds, Derby and Preston.

The team was Cathy Stringer, Chloe Bithell and Nikki Meadows.
