CALM, tender loving care.
That's how widow Val Constantine paid tribute to staff at Halton Haven Hospice for the gentle way they treated her husband Harry, in his final five days.
"I'm an ex nurse," said Val, of Heathfield Park, Widnes. "I didn't think anyone could surpass me but I take off my hat to them.
"They were so wonderful and caring. Every one of them, not just the trained staff, but all the nursing assistants. They tended to his every need and looked after us as well."
They kept a constant vigil.
"There were five of us sleeping overnight," said Val. "They fed us and gave us cups of tea.
"They took away the anxiety and stress from all of us. It was a real calming and loving environment.
"People should never be afraid of Halton Haven because they are just wonderful people.
"We will be forever grateful to Dom who initially started it."
Harry, 72, was being treated for prostate cancer when he developed an inoperable brain tumour.
Val was nursing him until he went into the hospice for a medication review and became too ill to go home.
"He was the life and soul of the party," recalled Val. "His laugh would set everyone off. He would dress up and do daft things with our grandchildren. He was wonderful."
Val is organising a pre Christmas market for Halton Haven at The Parklands, Prescot Road, Widnes from 11am-3pm on Sunday, November 6.
Call her on 0151-423 4363 to book a table for £8 or car boot on the day for £5.
